Six weeks off, and the weather has other plans. Good news: there is one outing in Almere where the forecast does not get a vote
Six weeks of summer holidays. Sounds like forever, right up until day three, when the ideas run dry and the kids have perfected the art of the dramatic sigh. Then there is the weather, rewriting your plans on a whim. Blue skies at breakfast, biblical downpour by lunch. Planning anything outdoors becomes a coin toss.
So flip the script and pick something the weather cannot touch: a proper rain-proof day out in Almere. At Indoor Mountainbike, the whole thing is under one roof. Go ahead and delete the weather app.
This might be the only action-packed day out where you can happily ignore the forecast. Our Almere park is fully indoors: four kilometres of trails plus a playground of obstacles and features, and not one cloud that can spoil it. Tipping it down outside? Great. Blazing sunshine? Also great. This one delivers whatever the sky is doing.
No more 'let us just see how it looks later', no plans washed out by two in the afternoon, no glum faces in the back seat when the rain rolls in again. Book online, get your rental bike sorted the moment you arrive, and let's ride!
Never ridden a mountain bike? Perfect, that is half the fun.
You do not need to be any good to have a brilliant afternoon here. It is a cracking day out with the kids: little ones can join from around seven (as long as they can already ride solo) and ease in on the gentle lines. The daredevils head straight for the technical stuff and the summer's star attraction, the airbag jump.
Good to know before you get here:
Everyone rides at their own speed, so nobody is left twiddling their thumbs. And fair warning: pop on 'just for half an hour' and you will still be grinning two hours later.
Drop by this summer and there is more than the indoor track on offer. Sun making an appearance? We fling open the doors to the outdoor area, where the fun keeps rolling, now with a bit of breeze in your hair (helmet, technically).
200 metres of pure pump track
Our pump track is 200 metres of rollers, berms and rhythm. You do not pedal, you pump: push the bike through each dip and let it fire you into the next corner. Get it right and it feels like flying. Beginners get instantly hooked, and the experienced crowd use it to carry serious speed and show off a little.
The airbag jump, for anyone chasing airtime
Fancy catching some air? The airbag jump is for everyone who thinks keeping both wheels down is overrated. Practise the tricks you have been chipping away at all summer, with a landing soft enough to laugh off the misses. Every jump, you want a bit more height, a bit more distance. Suddenly the afternoon is gone.
A well-earned break on the terrace
All that action works up an appetite, and we have got you covered. The moment the sun comes out, grab a spot on our terrace. Order a fresh, ice-cold smoothie, share a portion of crispy fries with the kids, or treat yourself to a slice of homemade cake with a good cup of coffee. Stretch out in the sunshine while the little ones squeeze in one more lap.
We are right in the middle of things in Almere, just off the A6. Twenty-five minutes from Amsterdam, about thirty-five from Utrecht. Loads of parking right outside, and your rental bike and helmet are all sorted in the booking beforehand, so there is nothing to cram into the boot.
Fancy making a full day of it? Bolt on a package with lunch, drinks or a BBQ. A good active blast for the whole family, then everyone round a table for something to eat, all in the same spot.
In short: the one summer outing you will never need a plan B for. See you in Almere.
